ASK Scandinavia’s Nova tote with Spinnova’s materials is now available for pre-order
Spinnova and ASK Scandinavia collaborate to bring a naturally dyed tote bag to the market. The Nova tote is made with fabric that contains 30% wood-based SPINNOVA® fibres and 70% cotton. The fabric has been dyed with a natural dye produced by Natural Indigo Finland’s, and the raw material for the dye is derived from Paulig’s coffee waste. The Nova tote is now available for pre-order at the ASK Scandinavia webshop.
ASK Scandinavia launches a naturally dyed tote bag made with SPINNOVA® fibres, now available for pre-order. The tote bag combines ASK Scandinavia’s minimalist style with durability and usability, making it perfect for everyday use. It is available in amber, a colour derived from Paulig’s coffee waste.
Paulig’s coffee roastery in Vuosaari, Helsinki, is one of Europe’s largest. The roastery delivers approximately 60 million coffee packages annually and produces more than 200 different end-products. Although the roastery processes are optimised to produce a minimal amount of waste, inevitable coffee ground waste still occurs.
Natural Indigo Finland has created a range of natural dye colours from coffee waste, ranging from yellow and orange to even blue shades. The fabric of ASK Scandinavia’s Nova tote bag has been dyed using Natural Indigo Finland’s dyeing method, a more sustainable alternative to conventional dyeing. For example, natural tannins are used in the method as excipients, making them a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative.
“The ASK x Spinnova bag is a testament to Nordic design and innovation, where timeless design meets pioneering textile technology. Crafted with Spinnova’s revolutionary technology and Natural Indigo Finland’s coffee waste dyes, it highlights how design is elevated by forward-thinking materials to shape the future of more purposeful fashion,” says Anette Cantagallo, Director of Design and Sustainability at ASK Scandinavia.
“It is a pleasure to be involved in a collaboration where waste coffee is utilised as an ecological dye. This project strongly supports the sustainable development goals in the textile industry,” comments Pasi Ainasoja, CEO of Natural Indigo Finland.
Spinnova has previously announced that, as part of its strategy, it will focus on fibre market development in addition to technology sales and development. The collaboration with ASK Scandinavia and Natural Indigo Finland is an example of increasing the addressable market for Spinnova’s fibre for its technology customers, introducing premium handbags and natural dyeing as a new addition to the fibre product application range.
“Spinnova is excited to participate in a collaboration that tackles issues within textile fibre production, fabric dyeing, and product design. It has been great to witness how innovators are sticking together to create products with a holistic sustainability story. We are also pleased with how well our fibres respond to natural dyes,” explains Shahriare Mahmood, Chief Product and Sustainability Officer at Spinnova.

Spinnova – The textile material innovation
Spinnova technology transforms the way textiles are manufactured globally. Based in Finland, Spinnova has developed breakthrough patented technology for making textile fibre out of wood pulp or waste, such as leather, textile or agricultural cropping waste, without harmful chemicals or dissolving.
Spinnova technology creates no side streams in the fibre production process, and the SPINNOVA® fibre has minimal CO2 emissions and water use, as well as being biodegradable and recyclable. Spinnova technology uses a mechanical process which gives the fibre the look and feel of a natural cellulosic fibre such as cotton.
Spinnova’s shares (SPINN) are listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market Finland.
